If I pre-position a backup tape on another system, then connect the tape or drive to the system, udev ends up rewinding the tape:
/lib64/udev/scsi_id --export --whitelisted --fallback-to-sysfs -s /class/scsi_tape/st0l -d /dev/.tmp-9-32

Please make it uses the non-rewinding tape devices for all probing.

tape-probing is a complicated topic I have no clue of.
Best is you ask on the hotplug mailinglist.

As of udev-123 it uses the bsg driver to access tape drives for scsi_id.
So this bug should be solved.
Can you please verify.
