A few months ago, Giacomo Comes <encode2mpeg@users.sourceforge.net> contributed a patch to dvdauthor allowing fast remultiplexing of subtitles from and to mpeg streams.

That's a very useful (albeit experimental) feature that allows transferring most DVD and VCD subtitle tracks without the need to first transcode them (via vobsub2spumux.sh or such).

Find included an udated dvdauthor 0.6.14 ebuild with the patch implementing raw subtitles support.

dvdauthor upstream seems dead but it looks like development continues here [1]. There are chances the patch [2] will be included.

This seems to be included in dvdauthor-0.7.0.   Now in Portage.
