Bug 21796 – System bell in KDE not working with alsa

The system bell in KDE does not work when using the alsa driver via82xx. I have a VT82C686 AC97 
Audio Controller (rev 40). 
 
The system bell DOES work when I use the OSS driver supplied in the kernel package (2.4.20) 
 
Additional info about the status of sound when using the alsa driver: 
* Apart from the system bell problem all other sound apps work fine 
* The system bell also works fine outside X 

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install alsa as described in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml 
2. Optionally, recompile KDE. (This does not really matter to the problem) 
3. Disable arts and enable the system bell in KDE control center. (Having arts enabled does not 
matter to the problem) 
4. Test the system bell by doing either of the following: 
- Push the "test" button in the system bell control module 
- Hit backspace in Konsole 
- Start up KPhone, enable system bell in the audio settings of KPhone & place a call to this host 
from some other host. 
Actual Results:  
Nothing, i.e. the system bell did not emit any sound. 

Expected Results:  
The system bell should have started "ringing" 

I have recompiled KDE (when upgrading to 3.1.2) while having "alsa" as an enabled USE keyword in 
my make.conf. This does not affect the problem however.  
 
(As a long shot I even reompiled X, because I did not have alsa as a USE variable when first building 
X. Of course, this did not matter either)

Do other alsa apps work? 

If so this is a kde issue. If not then the kde team is going to have to address this. I don't use kde.

Yes, all other sound apps seem to work OK (e.g. mixers, playback and  
recording).

Other sound apps work correctly. This is probably a KDE issue.

This bug should be closed. 
 
Resolution: To get the system bell working, you also have to check the Audible 
Bell/Use system bell entry in the Regional & Accessiblity/Accessibility section of the 
KDE Control Center (which took me a while to figure out.)

You're not the only one who finds the Control Center a bit confusing. :)
