Description Martin Mokrejš 2008-04-08 21:11:33 UTC
Hi,
while this is not much necessary to run Gentoo linux, I have recently spent couple of hours searching for ways to get fixed some old problem with certain OBP revions. I believe it would be include the following links (many of the SUN links stooped working as of the end of last years and March 1 2008 when they ceased another site):

CCing the Sparc team to see if they feel it's worth adding this information to the guide.

linking to external sites that are in flux (especially such a plentiful list like that) can be a pain. are the OBP binaries redistributable ? would be much easier to just mirror the files ourselves and link to those ... or make a cheesy ebuild that simply installs the firmware files into like /lib/firmware/ or /boot/ ...
Comment 3 nm (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-25 04:46:19 UTC
Well, if it's not necessary to run Gentoo Linux, and it's definitely maintenance-intensive, then it's not necessary to keep in a document somewhere.

If the Sparc team ever picks up and (legally) redistributes any OBP binaries, firmware, etc., let us know and maybe we can work in a doc reference. No need for now.

From the page http://access1.sun.com/patch.recommended/rec.html select for 'Search the recommended patches sorted by product:' the 'Hardware' option. This gives you a list of the firmware files. I will attach a re-worked txt version which should be simple to parse (TAB as delimiter) to create ebuilds. They could have a restrict turned on. The .ps or .pdf files in the archives state

You must have missed comment #3.

Also, have you seen how old those files are? *And* they are non-redistributable.

We definitely don't plan on keeping a maintenance-intensive list of non-redistributable files, so closing again.

Sparc, if you really want it, feel free to take the bug and stick it in your own project documentation.
Comment 7 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2008-05-09 20:46:16 UTC
of course the files are old ... that is probably the last time the firmware was updated. but people with these systems probably have even older firmware, and updating is usually desirable.
