Description Paul Melis 2008-04-05 13:49:17 UTC
On a new a Dell system the 2008.0 beta 1 LiveCD fails to boot with the following messages (typed over from the non-booting system):

>> Attempting to mount media:- /dev/sda
!! Media not found
>> No bootable medium found. Waiting for new devices...
>> Looking for the cdrom
>> Attempting to mount media:- /dev/sda
!! Media not found
!! Cound not find CD to boot, something else needed!
>> Determining root device..
!! Could not find the root block device in .

It seems the CD-Rom player on the second SATA port can't be found. The chipset is ICH9-based/Intel 82801 as far as I can tell.

During scanning of the different driver modules the "Scanning for ata_piix" takes ages to finish, roughly 4 minutes, while the other modules load in a snap.

With SystemRescueCD 1.0.1 (which is based on 2.6.24.4) the system _is_ bootable.

Is the CD-ROM SATA or IDE? If IDE, is your IDE controller marvell or jmicron?

It's a SATA drive. Relevant piece from dmesg after boot:

ata1.00: 976773168 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 0/32)
ata1.00: configured for UDMA/133
ata2.00: ATAPI: TSSTcorp DVD+/-RW TS-H653B, D300, max UDMA/100

Sorry, "after boot" means after booting SystemRescueCD 1.0.1 :)
