Description Vladimir G. Ivanovic 2008-03-24 22:34:09 UTC
Executing "vmware" yields this error message:
  /build/mts/release/bora-80004/bora/build/release-x64/ws/vmui/../libdir/libconf/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-png.so
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

The previous release (6.0.2.59824) worked (except for native networking), but this one doesn't even come up.

Hi Vladimir,

This is probably some library mismatch due to the libraries that vmware was compiled against, and those that you're running. A quick workaround is to try running vmware with:

VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="yes" vmware

It will be easier to try and diagnose the issue if you could include all the output that vmware provides from running vmware at the command line, back to when control is returned to the command line. Thanks... 5:)

Sorry. Here is all the output from prompt-to-prompt:
$ vmware

Unable to load image-loading module: /build/mts/release/bora-80004/bora/build/release-x64/ws/vmui/../libdir/libconf/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-png.so: /build/mts/release/bora-80004/bora/build/release-x64/ws/vmui/../libdir/libconf/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-png.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I get the same results when I invoke vmware with VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="yes".

If there's anything else you need to know, or an experiment you'd like me to perform, just ask.

I ran config-vmware.pl, skipping changing networking, and miracle of miracles! 'VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="yes" vmware' now "works". (I didn't try without the envar.)

I had not run config-vmware.pl after installing 6.0.3 because I did not want to change anything (so I manually deleted /etc/vmware/not_configured). My bad.

When I say "works" what I mean is that it now exhibits the same behavior as 6.0.2 + any-any-115: Sometimes, at startup, instead of WinXP starting, the screen remains black and a single tone beep with a frequency of 2 Hz (daaaah daaaah daaaah...) occurs. Everything freezes (no mouse or keyboard) and only cycling the power button to kill my X/Gnome session works. I can then restart vmware after this song and dance and WinXP comes up.

This product is no longer available in the portage tree. Could you please test whether you're still experiencing issues with the latest version of vmware (vmware-workstation-6.5.1)?
Comment 6 Vladimir G. Ivanovic 2009-01-13 19:55:42 UTC
I am no longer running Gentoo, so I can't test this bug. I'm closing the bug.
