Description Elwood W. Greene, Jr. 2008-03-11 04:46:19 UTC
When you open the page on Firefox 2.0.0.12 (Mac OS X 3.9 on Mac Quicksilver 733), it looks OK. At first!

BUT if you have more than one tab open, and flip to a different URL then back
to this one, screen fields from the previous tab overlay this screen!!

I can't imagine how this could happen unless the URL is not properly resetting the display VRAM! This may be a hidden bug in Firefox/Mozilla, or OS X. It sometimes, VERY rarely, updates the display improperly when switching OS X windows, particularly when switching very rapidly when opening video under QuickTime. But I've NEVER seen that happen consistently, as this is.

At this moment, I have 3 Firfox tabs open to 3 different URL's:
 1. Gentoo Enter A Bug (this url)
 2. Gmail - Compose Mail
 3. Gentoo Linux Documentation ... [the Gentoo ppc Installation Guide that demonstrates the problem]

For example, I go from this tab on Firefox to your Installation Guide, and Presto Change-o! (magic words), the part of the screen with the scrolldown
buttons that show
 " PPC

    OSX

   http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?style=printable&full=1
A sentence which summarises the problem. Please be descriptive and use lots of keywords. Include the full package atom with the version!
"

[preceding section between quotes]
OVERLAYS THE HANDBOOK PAGE!

Scrolling down eliminates the quoted text, but the screen still is FUBAR, with
scroll areas that are in the wrong spot, where they shouldn't be.

Essentially the same thing happens when I click on tab 2, Gmail Compose Mail,
and then click back on the Gentoo Handbook page: scrollable areas from the Gmail page appear overlaid on the handbook.

Strange, that.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open 3 URL's given above, in that order, as different Firefox tabs. You're now on the 3rd tab, the Installation Guide.
2. click on the first tab, this page. Page is completely normal.
3. click on the 3rd tab, the Installation Guide. Problem appears: Gentoo Enter A Bug scroll fields - some of them! - overlay Installation Guide!
4. Click on 2nd tab. Gmail page is normal.
5. Click on 3rd page. Gmail scroll areas overlay Installation Guide.

You can repeat steps 2 and or 4 (click back on tab 1 & 2) as many times as you want. Then click back on tab 3, and -- some of -- the LAST page's scroll areas
overlay the Gentoo Installation Guide.

6. Using the Firefox <previous page> green arrow icon on tab 3 goes back to
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml, where the problem does not appear.

7. Clicking on the ppc link ALSO causes URL Installation Guide for ppc page
to be FUBAR, in the moment containing areas from the previous URL,

roughly from the image-text
 "Available Languages"

through the first bar of links to the ppc etc versions of the guide

AND GOES ACROSS THE ENTIRE WIDTH OF THE DISPLAY.

So it shows corresponding portions of the

"Make a Donation"

and

[image showing "Gentoo Linux Virtual Servers"]

!

If this were a 1970's computer, I'd say "hardware, hardware, hardware" as the
source of the bug at this point. However, it's more like "XML, XML, XML", I think.

Lotsa luck fixing this one, guys and girls.
Actual Results:
I just closed tab #3 and re-opened it, to

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml

and am now about to re-click on the links for ppc.

Exactly the same problem ensues.

TO CHECK FOR SURE, I then used the Firefox <reload page> [blue "loopback" arrow icon].

THE PROBLEM DISAPPEARS: the web page looks clean. (step 1]
I go back to this page. (step 2]. I go back to the Installation guide [tab 3; step 3].

EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM APPEARS, pixel by pixel.

ditto step 4 and 5, SAME PROBLEM.

Expected Results:
Clean, readable document.

THERE AIN't no way in Hell this should ever happen. No time, No place in Cyberspace.

Workaround:

Reload the page.

Now let me see if it SCROLLS OK or not??!!

IT FAILS TO SCROLL PROPERLY! And it seems to be dependent on time, or at least, where the window was scrolled before I did the reload.

Essentially below the bottom of the initial screen, lines with links on them
get

repeated
repeated
repeated
repeated
.....

for a while, and then something else scrolls up that at first glance looks ok,
but I'm wasting my time here.

I CAN'T USE YOUR DOCUMENT IN THIS FORM. I CAN'T USE YOUR SYSTEM. Rats.

And I thought Debian was hard to install (no X11 driver for my ancient system,
and I'm a Unix novice, so I was going to try installing Gentoo XAC to make me a new /etc/X11/config file. Don't know how, and from your Lovely! home page, it looked like a sure thing to install Gentoo Linux and run - fast. Fat chance at the moment.)

Second chance workaround: buying a Gentoo Linux server? For a hundred bucks or less?! I'd still have to enet my system to it (under MAC OS X X11?). At how much grief?

Goodby, guys. Back to Debian.

That's All, Folks!!

Not our problem.
