When you start Skype twice, it launches a second instance. If you have auto-logon (with saved password) enabled, it then forgets the password, which is quite annoying.

A wrapper script with PID file would be nice.

Errr, such as /usr/bin/skype or what kind of wrapper you exactly mean? Why don't you instead get the stupid password bug fixed upstream?

Launching two instances is actually handy if you want to use two accounts at the same time.  Why restrict this?
