According to this plugin homepage:

The FreeType Plug-In is not being developed further, nor is it actively maintained. We believe that the GIMP text tool has become sufficiently good so that there's not any longer a need for this plug-in.

The latest version on that site is for Gimp 2.0, while we have 2.2.17 and 2.4.2 both stable right now. Considering this, I think this package can be safely removed from portage tree.
(I guess this is the first time I ask a package to be removed!)

Since leonardop has been MIA for quite some time and is the maintainer of this package..I'm masking this for 60 days to give him more just abit longer time than normal to see this bug and whatnot. I talked to eva in IRC and we agree that there is no use for this package anymore, using eva (another member of the gnome team) as a proxy voice for leonardop ;)
