Error upon invoking make menuconfig. Refers to files missing from the kernel sources

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1) Install =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r2
2) cd /usr/src/linux
3) make menuconfig

Actual Results:  
# make menuconfig
scripts/Makefile.build:41: /usr/src/linux-2.6.24-gentoo-r2/scripts/basic/Makefile: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `/usr/src/linux-2.6.24-gentoo-r2/scripts/basic/Makefile'.  Stop.
make: *** [scripts_basic] Error 2


Expected Results:  
menu to be brought up

Note: After having this fail, I immediately installed both 2.6.23-r8 and 2.6.24-r1 neither of which gave this same error

2nd note: I am using the default 2007.0 profile for amd64 along with USE="bash-completion d gmp gpm gtk gnome X -pam -qt3 -qt4 -kde -pam" along with the symlink flag just for gentoo-sources

Well, emerge --sync please. There was some screw-up with amd64 profile's bashrc. If that doesn't help, we need emerge --info.
