emerge.log file for klibc-1.5

Description François Valenduc 2008-02-08 19:56:35 UTC
When klibc-1.5.8, it seems it doesn't use the kernel sources corresponding to the /usr/src/linux symlink. As a result, when I build splashutils, fbcondecor support is not build.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge klibc-1.5.8
2.emerge splashutils
3.
Actual Results:
notice that fbcondecor support is not build even if the sources in /usr/src/linux are patched with fbcondecor

Expected Results:
fbcondecor being build with splashutils

emerge.log file for klibc-1.5

When I emerge klibc-1.5, it use the right kernel source, corresponding to /usr/src/linux which points to the kernel 2.6.23.14 sources. These are patched with fbcondecor, hence splashutils can be build with fbcondecor support.

I hope I have provided enough informations now.

please review bug 198937 and bug 190113.
It is not MEANT to use /usr/src/linux, because that is not suitable in many cases - where /usr/src/linux does not contain uvesafb or the userspace #bits != kernel #bits (eg sparc, ppc64-32ul, some mips).

If there is some newer vanilla kernel that contains fbcondecor, I'll bump the sources used by klibc, but having a klibc that actually works on all machines is more important than graphics niceties.
Comment 7 François Valenduc 2008-02-09 19:37:39 UTC
There is something I don't understand. Splashutils needs klibc to be build but the newer klibc releases doesn't permit to use it. For me this is a regression, even if you call "splashutils" graphics niceties.

splashutils-1.5.3.4 builds fine for me.(In reply to comment #7)

If splashutils really doesn't compile at all, open a new bug. It does build here on: x86, ppc64-32ul, amd64.
Comment 9 François Valenduc 2008-02-09 20:41:13 UTC
Splashutils can be build, but as I have already said, fbcondecor support can't be build with the latest version of klibc, so it's quite unuseful.
Comment 10 Robin Johnson archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2008-02-10 00:50:10 UTC
# USE=fbcondecor emerge splashutils
compiles fine. if it doesn't actually work, answer the original question I posed:
"If there is some newer vanilla kernel that contains fbcondecor, I'll bump the
sources used by klibc"

Is there such a VANILLA kernel? The klibc stuff needs a bump to 2.6.24 sources soon anyway.
Comment 11 François Valenduc 2008-02-10 08:13:48 UTC
Indeed, updating splashutils and adding fbcondecor as use flag solves the problem.
Thanks for your help.
Comment 12 Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-02-10 11:07:10 UTC
There is no such vanilla kernel. I believe it is Michal's long term goal to get it upstream, but as he doesn't seem to get much time to work on these things I am guessing it will be a while yet.
