On doing emerge sync I got the following outpu at the end of the process.  I 
think the rsync mirror was rsync.skynet.be.

Firstly, is it normal to receive all these garbled messages about binary 
packages?  Secondly, there isn't an update to portage so why should it say 
there is?  Here is my emerge info.

The binary stuff is normal. It checks your binary packages to see if anything they reference has moved in the tree.

The update to Portage deal is because .48 is masked and therefore it thinks the unmasked version is an update. I actually think carpaski pulled that notice out for the next release, but I'm not sure.
