After updating to x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-169.09 X stop to start and I cannot load new module because of this in dmesg:
NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 169.09, but
NVRM: this kernel module has the version 100.14.19.  Please
NVRM: make sure that this kernel module and all NVIDIA driver
NVRM: components have the same version.

You must unload the old kernel module; won't work otherwise.

"update-modules" was enough but, shouldn't this be done "automatically" after emerging new version

Hmmm well, that's what the linux-mod eclass already does for every external module in pkg_postinst, no idea why you needed to run it second time.
