I have exactly the same problem, running top you'll see the task: gnome-appearance-properties --show-page=background and you'll need to kill it as root. $ emerge --info Portage 2.1.4.4 (default-linux/x86/2007.0/desktop, gcc-4.1.2, glibc-2.6.1-r0, 2.6.23-gentoo-r8 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.23-gentoo-r8 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+ Timestamp of tree: Mon, 25 Feb 2008 07:46:02 +0000 app-shells/bash: 3.2_p17-r1 dev-java/java-config: 1.3.7, 2.1.4 dev-lang/python: 2.4.4-r6 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r6 sys-apps/baselayout: 1.12.11.1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.18.1-r2 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.61-r1 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2, 1.10 sys-devel/binutils: 2.18-r1 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.0-r4 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.26 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.23-r3 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/lib/openoffice/share/dict/ooo/dictionary.lst /var/bind" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/splash /etc/terminfo /etc/udev/rules.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--alphabetical" FEATURES="distlocks parallel-fetch sandbox sfperms strict unmerge-orphans userfetch" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://81.19.51.238/mirror/gentoo/" LANG="es_ES.UTF-8" LC_ALL="es_ES.UTF-8" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1,-s" LINGUAS="es_ES.UTF-8" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_COMPRESS="bzip2" PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS="-f9" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="3dnow X a52 aac acl acpi alsa ao apache2 audiofile berkdb bitmap-fonts bonobo bzip2 cairo caps cdr cli cracklib crypt cups curl dbus dts dvd dvdr dvdread eds emboss encode esd evo exif expat ffmpeg firefox flac foomaticdb fortran gdbm gif glut gnome gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 gtkhtml hal iconv idn imagemagick imlib ipv6 isdnlog java jpeg jpeg2k kerberos lame lcms ldap libcaca libg++ libsamplerate logrotate mad midi mikmod mmap mmx mng modplug mono motif mp3 mpeg mudflap nas ncurses nls nptl nptlonly ogg opengl openmp pam pcre pdf perl pic png posix pppd python quicktime readline reflection sdl session slang sndfile spell spl sse ssl svg tcpd threads tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev unicode usb vcd vorbis win32codecs wxwindows x86 xcomposite xml xorg xpm xv xvid zlib" ALSA_CARDS="intel8x0" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse" KERNEL="linux" LINGUAS="es_ES.UTF-8" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia nv" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, INSTALL_MASK, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS both of us are using nvidia drivers, let's see...

BTW, what are your USE flags? $ emerge -vp control-center These are the packages that would be merged, in order: Calculating dependencies... done! [ebuild R ] gnome-base/control-center-2.20.3 USE="alsa -debug eds esd hal" 2,208 kB Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 2,208 kB Reproducible here too. I too have an NVidia card but I doubt it's related to that. Also seen on Ubuntu: Ubuntu bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/147045 Moving my ~/.gtkrc-2.0 seems to fix the problem upstream url taken from launchpad bug report. Deleting ~/.gtkrc-2.0 fixed the problem for me (and for those upstream). I'm also on nvidia, but I believe the problem lies in the use of gtk-chtheme, or similar programs. upstream says fixed by gtk+-2.12.12 release, could you try that or a more recent release ? I'm afraid I don't have a machine available during the next few months where I could test this, please handle this bug as you see fit. feel free to reopen if you have any updates to provide. (In reply to comment #9) > feel free to reopen if you have any updates to provide. > I just want to confirm that this is fixed after upgrading my x11-libs/gtk+ to Version 2.12.12 |
