If I try to use the fglrx (ati-drivers) driver, the system xorg-server hangs immediately, before showing the initial screen

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge x11-base/xorg-server-1.4.0.90
2. emerge x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.433
3. configure in /etc/X11/xorg.conf fglrx as the driver for the video card (in my case a Sapphire X1600 XT)
4. Start the x server

Actual Results:  
System hangs, the keyboard is inactive (cannot stop the x server) reboot necessary to continue operations
