Summary: x11-drivers/ati-drivers cause xorg-server-1.4.0.90 to hang/freeze

Description Bernd Steinhauser 2007-12-17 07:34:36 UTC
I had xorg-server-1.4 installed, which worked for about a month without problems. When I performed a switch to xorg-server-1.4.0.90 I experienced a lot of hangups/freezes. Switching down to xorg-server-1.4.0-r2 and everything will work again.

If maybe others could confirm this, then there should be a block in xorg-server-1.4.0.90, blocking <=ati-drivers-8.433.
Until then maybe the status of this bug should be unconfirmed.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge xorg-server-1.4.0.90
2. emerge ati-drivers-8.433

Actual Results:
xorg-server will hang after some time (it happened once after 10mins and once after 2h or so, normally somewhere in between), it takes one CPU, but the computer is still accessible via ssh, though X can't be killed, even with -9.

Not really sure whether this is relevant to this bug, but here it is:

I'm using xf86-video-nv-2.1.6 (for an nvidia card, obviously) and I experienced hangs with xorg-server-1.4.0.90, too - after less than about a minute each time (2x) I tried. The freezes occured when I switched windows to gtk+-applications.
Unfortunately, I have neither the time nor the means (only one computer right now) to investigate this further.

As most users are unable to reproduce this even upstream, I would vote against a mask. I use this beta which is nothing more then bug fixes this release and have no issues at all. I will get an eta on 8.44x release later today and post back for you to do some testing with it.

I wasn't really sure if it is ati-drivers that trigger it, but I couldn't find anything else that could be responsible. I'll see if it works with the new driver, when that comes out.

I think this is a different issue. But I guess it would be a resolved/upstream.

Any comment with how 8.44x is working out for ya. I am aware of the modeline issue which is fixed in the beta already, but will not be avaliable for a few more weeks.

Actually I just installed it half an hour ago.
I didn't try it till now, because I needed a stable desktop.
It's running now for some time and didn't crash. We'll see.

So I have now been able to use xorg-server-1.4.0.90 with ati-drivers-8.443.1 without a freeze. So it seems to be fixed in 8.443.1.
I'll leave this open for another 2 days or so, to be sure and will then mark it as being resolved.
Comment 11 Bernd Steinhauser 2008-01-08 03:39:31 UTC
I did now use xorg-server-1.4.0.90+ati-drivers-8.443.1 for a few days, the system ran for over one day and I didn't hit any freeze, crash.
So I suppose, that it has been fixed in 8.443.1 (maybe they don't even know, that they fixed it, I don't know ;)).
However, if someone tries to use xorg-server-1.4.0.90 with ati-drivers, make sure you use at least version 8.443.1.

-> RESOLVED, FIXED.
