sparky linux-headers # fetchnews -v -v -v -v
Cannot obtain lock file, aborting.

/usr/portage/net-news/leafnode/leafnode-1.9.21.ebuild fails,and
/usr/portage/net-news/leafnode/leafnode-1.9.19.ebuild works

BTW I have read the upgrade instructions and the FAQ, and tried creating
/var/lock/news, but to no avail.

Hi!

Just be sure that /var/lock/news belongs to user/group news:

# chown news.news /var/lock/news

This should (hopefully) fix your problem.

I'll submit a fixed .ebuild along with a version bump to 1.9.22 soon.

Just submitted leafnode-1.9.22 (bug #2035) which also should fix this bug.
