Many packages (such as dev-lisp/clisp or sci-mathematics/maxima) depends on virtual/tetex package. Since the tetex is not the only latex distribution in portage.

app-text/texlive-2007 provides virtual/tetex.

Why did I have to add the virtual/tetex file myself? Before portage tried to install tetex (for example for maxima)?

Add??? You don't add any files for old-style virtuals anywhere. If you don't want app-text/tetex which is the default for the virtual, you need to emerge texlive-2007 first, or p.mask app-text/tetex

Oh sorry - I just realised I have to reemerge the texlive. (the version hasn't changed but the ebuild does from texlive-overlay).
