Running "mirrorselect -s 4" gives :
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.mneisen.org/ ftp://ftp.mneisen.org/gentoo ...

the dns names are resolved into the same host :

n22 /usr/portage # host gentoo.mneisen.org
gentoo.mneisen.org is an alias for node-0.mneisen.org.
node-0.mneisen.org has address 88.198.37.77
n22 /usr/portage # host ftp.mneisen.org
ftp.mneisen.org is an alias for node-0.mneisen.org.
node-0.mneisen.org has address 88.198.37.77

What about removing dup hostnames if they only differ in the protocol to avoid a failure if the host itself is down ?
