Description Daniele C. 2007-10-04 11:28:32 UTC
I have recently updated by gentoo box (after an emerge --sync); consequently, my i810 video driver was updated to v2.1.1

When using that version of the driver I cannot use any desktop engine because X hangs and drops the mouse and then the keyboard input.
See https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12666 for a detailed description of the trials I made.

I have now emerged xf86-video-i810 v1.7.4 which is *not* affected by the X hangups.

I strongly suggest to put the 2.1.0 version of the i810 package in the unstable branch, because it is!!! Looks like the 2.x versions of the i810 package are aliases of the generic video-intel driver.

I didn't know that I had switched to the generic intel driver, because I had the i810 package. Please fix this bad hack in portage.

There should be a different package, called for example xf86-video-intel, since they are NOT equivalent.

I lost many days to find where the cause was, because I had no clue that I was using the generic intel driver and thought that it was X's fault or the synaptics device's fault...

I could spot a symlink from intel_drv.so to i810_drv.so in the xorg drivers directory - and that looks like a hack :-(

Nope...the bug happens less often but is still there.

I can't yet find the cause but after the last emerge --sync I have X hanging almost instantly if I bring up two tooltip texts.

I will submit a new bug report as soon as I can better individuate the cause...still the i810 driver seems more stable than the generic intel driver
