php came up 22nd on the list of merged packages, and apache 2.2 came up 24th.  That made php modules not be compiled properly for apache 2.2, as apache 2.0 was installed, during the php build process.

Oh, I suppose I should have given the error...
apache2 # /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
 * Apache2 has detected a syntax error in your configuration files:
