Description Henry Wertz 2007-10-01 05:46:34 UTC
On a few cards such as the Geforce4 MX440 (well, in my case the one builtin to the nforce2), the 1.0.96xx drivers simply do not work for almost any 3D application. Simple apps like glxgears look fine, but any opengl app that uses textures, the textures are all either black or dark grey. 7186 works but is not feature complete (no composite, no beryl, konsole scrolling is for some reason unaccelerated, although other scrolling is accelerated.) 8776 on the other hand seems feature complete for this era card and bug-free. Drivers >=9700 require a Geforce FX series minimum and so will not work at all.

The attached URL has further discussion on nvnews.net, and they're harder to find but there's other discussions on there of similar problems; unfortunately nvidia seems to dismiss any mention of this as hardware problems, despite older drivers being rock solid.

     I don't think it'll be too useful, but I'll attach nvidia-bug-report.log.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use a system with a GF4 MX440, or I believe a few other cards.
2. Put on any 96xx driver
3. Run secondlife, foobillard, or any 3D app of your choice. secondilfe for instance is pitch black with white boxes for first name, last name, and password; foobillard I think the billard cues are just visible very dark grey.

The nvidia-bug-report.log from the offending system. nforce2 chipset with Geforce4 MX440 video, set for 128MB shared memory. I've played with AGP aperature, shared mem size, even turned the AGP down to see if it'd do anything. Nothing has an affect except using older drivers...

Then try 96.43.01; if it still doesn't work, you'll have to bug nVidia as there's nothing we could do about this.

You can get the old ebuilds from http://sources.gentoo.org/viewcvs.py/gentoo-x86/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers/?hideattic=0 if you want them.
