Improvements are similar to those made to x11-libs/qwt-5.0.2 in bug #189921.

I've not fully understood why you do the following:

    rm "${D}"/usr/$(get_libdir)/libqwt-qt3.so

libqwt-qt3.so is a symlink to the actual library file, why do you remove it?

can't rememner why that's in there now either.  I commented it out, and saved this in portage as 5.0.2-r1.  Thanks!
