After upgrading from sys-apps/shadow-4.0.18.1 to sys-apps/shadow-4.0.18.1-r1, I discovered I could no longer log on to the machine at the console. After some comparison to another server (amd64 arch, so it did not have the same update yet), I found some small difference in the /etc/pam.d/login file. Reverting to the file from 4.0.18.1 allows logins at the console again.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Upgrade from sys-apps/shadow-4.0.18.1 to sys-apps/shadow-4.0.18.1-r1
2. Attempt to log on at the actual machine, using the standard console (not XDM).


Actual Results:  
I am given the same login failure message as if I had provided bad login credentials.

Expected Results:  
Presented with the bash prompt.

Currently installed version of sys-libs/pam is 0.78-r5.

Then remove /etc/nologin
