When the following .nanorc is in my ~/ a segmentation fault occurs. 
 
syntax "config" ".conf" 
color red "^use=.*"

I've tested this on x86 and alpha, with both USE=slang and USE=-slang.  I don't see this problem.  Please post the following information: 
(1) output of emerge info
(2) output of "epm -q nano" (you might need to emerge epm first)

I also tried less agressive CFLAGS (-march=pentium3 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer) with the same result.
