Attach the output of `hald --daemon=no --verbose=yes`; also - do you have media-gfx/gphoto2 installed? hald --daemon=no --verbose=yes 21:38:46.152 [I] hald.c:533: hal 0.5.9.1 21:38:46.152 [I] hald.c:598: Will not daemonize 21:38:46.153 [I] hald_dbus.c:4807: local server is listening at unix:abstract=/var/run/hald/dbus-8oxpWDlzfT,guid=d5e6b011afcd79b21153d5004682bcc6 Runner started - allowed paths are '/usr/libexec:/usr/lib/hal/scripts:/usr/bin' 21:38:46.157 [I] hald_runner.c:299: Runner has pid 559 21:38:46.158 [W] ci-tracker.c:200: Could not get uid for connection: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner Could not get UID of name 'org.freedesktop.DBus': no such name 21:38:46.158 [E] hald_dbus.c:4462: Cannot get caller info for org.freedesktop.DBus 21:38:46.158 [I] hald_runner.c:180: runner connection is 0x80977a8 21:38:46.160 [I] mmap_cache.c:251: cache mtime is 1182971311 *** [DIE] osspec.c:watch_fdi_files():349 : Unable to initialize inotify: Function not implemented Well, maybe you should recompile your kernel w/ INOTIFY enabled. INOTIFY option is present and activated in my kernel, i've tested on a gentoo-sources 2.6.20-r8 kernel and it doesn't work well. So... will you answer my question about gphoto2? And you have hal-info installed? hal-info is installed and gphoto is not installed You've updated your linux-headers and added inotify support to your kernel. However, as linux-headers notes, you must re-compile glibc so that glibc can now know that certain functions API exists in the kernel and can have an implementation.
