Bug 18283 – Devfsd not creating /dev entries

Hi,

A couple of days ago I did an update world. After that my system boots right up
and I can log in, but none of my /dev entries have been created. This means my
mouse, cdrw and anything that is created in /etc/devfsd.conf is not in /dev.

Now I think it has something to do with gawk, as I think that was one of the
packages updated when I emerged world. There is a similar bug (Bugzilla Bug
18127) but there are several important differences, which is why I'm filing
another bug (my apologies if these reasons aren't good enough for a new bug report):
1. I am running a stable system (except for Xfree 4.3 and Mozilla 1.3) and
haven't installed gawk-3.1.2 ever.
2. My system boots up completely and works fine except for 
having no entries such as usbmouse in /dev (I don't get any error messages)
3. Reverting to previous versions of gawk does not solve the problem

Currently I have the latest stable versions of gawk and baselayout installed,
I've tried some of the ideas mentioned in this thread on the Forums:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=43578 but have had no luck.

This problem is pretty severe as I can't use Xwindows without a mouse, and so
Gentoo is pretty unusable at the moment.

Man do I feel dumb. Along the way of trying to fix this problem I re-emerged baselayout and by mistake overwrote my modules.autoload file. I re-did the file, but forgot to load mousedev...:(

But the initial problem was caused by the update world...all I can say is that the problem must have been fixed by me emerging gawk, baselayout and devfsd again.

I'm very sorry about that!
