Man do I feel dumb. Along the way of trying to fix this problem I re-emerged baselayout and by mistake overwrote my modules.autoload file. I re-did the file, but forgot to load mousedev...:( But the initial problem was caused by the update world...all I can say is that the problem must have been fixed by me emerging gawk, baselayout and devfsd again.
