Post relavent lines from '/var/log/messages' and 'xscreensaver -verbose' when this is happening, also output of 'emerge -pv pam'. Thanks. FWIW, I've seen this when the /etc/pam.d/xscreensaver file had not gotten installed. /var/log/messages held the key; /lib/security/pam_unix.so was mode 000. I don't know why, but for some reason, during this install (this is a fresh install) a bunch of apparently random files in /bin wound up with mode 000.
