Building gnome fails at building x11-libs/vte-0.14.2, even though version >= 6.1.0

(chroot) uilleann / # /usr/bin/freetype-config --version
9.15.3

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge gnome
2.
3.

Actual Results:  
Gnome build fails at building vte

checking for freetype-config... /usr/bin/freetype-config
checking for FreeType - version >= 6.1.0... no
