if compiling with fortran 
checking if Fortran "byte" is C "signed char"... configure: error: Could not link conftestf.o and conftest.o

without: bugs in function main()

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge netcdf
2. USE="-fortran" emerge netcdf


Actual Results:  
impossible to install

Reopen if you can reproduce this with _sane_ C[XX]FLAGS, such as CFLAGS="-mtune=athlon64 -O3"
