Even though its claimed to support ppp, the boot CD does not provide the pppd 
daemon. Thus, gentoo cannot be easily installed with a modem.

If one compiles pppd and runs it, it exits with the error saying that there is 
no support for ppp in the kernel, even when the ppp* modules have been 
modprobe'd.
