When compiled into the kernel (2.4.20-gentoo-r1) the aic7xxx driver fails to
initialize on boot. Vanilla works fine.

please post your kernel .config and a look of your dmesg output if possible. 
 
if you are not using xfs, have you tried gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r2?
