emerge locks up at this line, only repeated ^C and ^Z can break me out of it, and using the 'reset' command is needed to get my shell back in order.

checking where .elc files should go... Vim: Warning: Output is not to a terminal


Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge bash
2. wait for ./configure to reach the line that says: checking where .elc files should go...

Actual Results:  
Vim prints the following warning, portage hangs and locks up my terminal

What does vim exactly have in common w/ emerge bash??? Attach the complete log here:

a little poking around yielded the following:

This is quite obviously the cause.
