Description BlockFin 2003-03-16 12:52:56 UTC
The GNOME terminal stays open for only an instant if I log in through gdm. It
works fine when using startx, and Konsole works in KDE when using startx.

Athlon TBird 900
256MB RAM
Linux kernel 2.4.19
GNOME 2.2 (2.2.0?)

any console output when you try to run it (run it in an xterm or something) ?
Comment 2 BlockFin 2003-03-16 14:26:49 UTC
I'm ashamed to say that I didn't even think of running it from xterm.

Also, I tried searching bugzilla for "xdm," instead of "gdm," and I came up with this:

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15844

I believe it's related to my problem. I'll try xterm a bit later and see what it comes up with.

Sorry for the delay. Running gnome-terminal from xterm gives no output.
Comment 4 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-03-25 08:15:49 UTC
you say when you 'login trough gdm' ? if you run gnome-terminal from clean X does it also fail ? In that case it's most likely that you don't have a shell set for your user.
Comment 5 BlockFin 2003-03-25 09:30:03 UTC
It works fine through startx.
Comment 6 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-04-25 09:38:59 UTC
hm never saw your answer, but better late then never : did you have a shell set for your user ? If not, thats most likely the problem

Closing, since its old, reopen if needed reporter.
Comment 7 BlockFin 2003-04-25 21:05:40 UTC
Yes, I do have a shell set for this user.

I will try emerging XFree 4.3 as mentioned in the bug I referred to earlier, but it'll take me some weeks to get the time (and desire) to get it done.
