Bug 175288

Summary: Genkernel doesn't enable SATA drivers in 2.6.19 and higher

Description John Saunders 2007-04-19 23:55:13 UTC
In kernels 2.6.19 the SATA drivers were moved out of the SCSI hierarchy and into an ATA hierarchy. The standard config generkernel uses to configure the kernel is fetched from /usr/share/genkernel/x86/kernel-config-2.6 and it still has the old CONFIG_SCSI_SATA_* defines, but not the new CONFIG_ATA and CONFIG_SATA_* defines. The result is that a standard "genkernel --install all" command will produce a non-working kernel for people with SATA harddisks.

Genkernel version is 3.4.6 (the latest as of this posting I believe).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. genkernel --install all
2. Try to boot from a SATA drive

Expected Results:
I think it unreasonable that a user would have to use the --menuconfig option every time to re-enable SATA. For a less common driver I would say it is OK, but for such a critical driver to the core functionality of Gentoo I think it should be enabled by default.

The way genkernel handles the kernel config files needs to be re-evaluated. The 2 options I see are:
1) Use the arch/i386/defconfig that comes with each kernel. Although Gentoo may require some tweaks to this to allow the generated kernel to boot properly.
2) Don't provide a single kernel for the 2.6 series, allow kernels to be specified with 3 digits and have genkernel pick the latest i.e. say you have kernel configs for 2.6, 2.6.5 and 2.6.19, if the kernel version is 2.6.19 or later you use the 2.6.19 config. It it is 2.6.5 or later, but less than 2.6.19 you use the 2.6.5 config. Anything else uses the 2.6 config.

This has been fixed in 3.4.7 already. Please check the latest version of a package to see if your bug still exists before filing a bug report. Thank you. =]
