gentoo 2.4.20-r1, I couldn't figure-out why kernel compile wasn't working, and
then realized that ( (2n-1) lines above where the final eror-message was ) it
said it was pptp that boshed.

So, I tried un-moduling /that/, and compile worked.

It's under GRE ( none of these have particularly helpful help, so I'm trying to
enable 'em all, under Connection Tracking, because that is a significant
firewalling means -sigh- sometimes I just wish I /inherently/ understood it all )

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.in first compile of gentoo-2.4.20-r1, enable Netfilter/Connection-Tracking,
moduling it, and moduling all its sub-options ( FTP, IRC, GRE ), and moduling
GRE's child, PPTP
2.do the MAKE ( make dep && make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install
3.notice the eror messages it throws in one's face, ages later...



Expected Results:  
actual kernel compile, obviously...

I use gentoo 2.4.20-r2 here, which compiles just fine, even with those two
modules turned on.

The downside: it kernel panics, when I try to use netfilter (e.g. load the modules)

I still try to reproduce this, which is rather hard, since it plainly locks my
box and does not leave any traces :(

I have exactly the same problem. Seems like the following kernel patch is a bad thing: 
 
Checking 700_iptables-03_ip_conntrack_proto_tcp-lockfix (plain text format)... looks good. 
Applying... done. 
 
By the way: I'm using gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r2
