Bug 172718 – networking init scripts (i.e, net.eth0) fail with no response on duplicate ip addresses

I recently ran into a problem where the networking init script net.eth0 not only did not start, but just returned with no response given on the command line or in the system log at all.

It turned out there was another system on the network with this computer's IP address, a duplicate IP address. 

Under Windows and Mac OS X, the system not only reports this, but even the MAC address of the offending computer!

I got to think that this is doable under Linux and even odd that the net.eth0 script doesn't figure it why it is failing and report it in similar fashion.

i really dont think any of this belongs in the init.d script ... it is not the net scripts job to probe the network and detect misconfigurations on the end of administrators with respect to duplicate ip addresses

i dont know what you mean by the net scripts gave you no response at all ... you didnt indicate what sort of configuration you have in /etc/conf.d/net and you didnt include `emerge --info` ... please rectify that

No response means just that. I typed return ./net.eth0 start on the command line and it just goes to the next line at the prompt. There should be at least some indication that it failed and ideally its best guess as to why.

Do you have parallel startup enabled?
