Another Axel crash is detailed at  http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=162005 . Maybe the resolution for this crash should be the same ? Especially as Executioner has shown interest in maintaining axel.

Yep, from the looks of it this is the same as bug 162005.  The upstream maintainer is dead, so this bug has been dormant for a while.
