Bug 171622

Summary: installer 2006.1 liveCD hangs on my 40-wired IDE system during 'Letting udev process events...'
Product: Gentoo Release Media Reporter: alexsaa
Component: LiveCD/DVD/USBAssignee: Gentoo Release Team <releng>
Status: RESOLVED DUPLICATE
Severity: minor CC: alexsaa
Priority: High
Version: unspecified
Hardware: x86
OS: Linux
Whiteboard:
Package list:
Runtime testing required: ---

Description alexsaa 2007-03-20 21:43:58 UTC
Context:
I have 40-wired IDE cable and udma100-capable HDD.
During booting liveCD, it is (incorrectly, I guess) set to udma100 and gets errors.
see bug 171619 for more details.

Then, with 2006.1 liveCD-i686 installer 2006.1, computer hangs right after lines:

Populating /dev with existing devices through events...
Letting udev process events...
udev-event[28290]: find_free_number: %e is deprecated, will be removed and is unlikely to work correctly. Don't use it.

As far as I hear, right after the last of these message, hard drives make some usual activity sound for about 0.3 seconds and then activity stops. Neither numlock not capslock are responded with leds. (that's why I say hang).

I am not sure of 100% reproducibility, but it is at least 80% often on my system (I tried few times only, can try up to 20 times if required for testing).

Note, gentoo 2005.1 livecd boots ok (but the things mentioned in bug 171619 are the same).

Also, ide=nodma option solves this problem as well.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. 40-wired cable
2. udma-100 HDD
3. gentoo LiveCD-i686 installer 2006.1 with no kernel options

Actual Results:
on my system, hangs t the place mentioned

Expected Results:
proceeds with boot

primary ide, 80-wired cable:
hda: ST380021A, there are many partitions
hdb: ST3200826A, there are many partitions

secondary ide, 40-wired cable:

hdd: TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R1312

I supposed it was not a good idea for a boot to hang 'merely' because of dma errors on a drive that is neither boot drive nor used by any application.

Finally, I would not post unless 2005.1 was ok.

Of course, you know better.
