I had alsa installed, decided to remove it and go with kernel drivers.  emerge
-C everything alsa, then recompiled the apps that depended on it.  Gaim would
not compile, even with the -alsa use flag.  Compile output attached shortly.

you still have libraries linked to alsa ...

`ldd /usr/lib/*` and re-emerge anything that is linked against the missing alsa
