After misconfiguring xdm I get into trouble.  After a reboot, it starts X and 
then fails, restarts X, fails, endlessly.  Wouldn't a more fault tolerant 
behaviour be to try "x" amount of times and then go back to a console login?  I 
had to cold boot back into the install cd and remove xdm from the startup.  
Since I wasn't able to umount my partitions I consider this a bad thing.

Upstream problem ...  will look into a local fix later on
