Bug 159710 – net-wireless/ipw3945-1.1.3 wlan driver doesn't work

Things seem to be getting worse (before they'll get better i hope ;)
having upgraded as you suggested, i am now unable to even "see" the interface:

lo        no wireless extensions.

ieee0     no wireless extensions.

eth0      no wireless extensions.

it doesn't start the daemon automatically, when i do it by hand i have serious
doubts that it loads the firmware and the controller led can't even be bothered
to just flicker. 

i guess the snippet below could be a hint, especially the "permission denied"
part:

i am quite optimistic that i would be able to get it working, but i think it
may be better to have it fixed in the distro if its not just a glitch in my
system

Please post the driver version, emerge --info and relevant part of your network configuration and reopen then.

It appears that the daemon is trying to write a file as user ipw3945d in /var/run:

norbert run # chmod 777 /var/run
norbert run # ipw3945d
