Bug 159625 – gentoo-sources-2.6.19-r2 doesn't load the pata driver before VFS=

i emerged the gentoo-sources-2.6.19-r2
i added an entry on grub for the new kernel:
kernel /usr/src/linux-2.6.19-gentoo-r2/arch/i386/boot/bzImage root=/dev/sda2
sda2 is not because my hdd is scsi but it's because the ata has been re-writen under a new section that can be find under  "Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental) drivers"
so i booted and it made a kernel pannic saying:
VFS: cannot open root device "sda2" or unknow block(0,0)

i compiled the support for pIIX just like my previous kernel that had ata drivers:
Intel PATA old PIIX support (Experimental)
lspci gives:
00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801BAM IDE U100 (rev 03)
so it is correct

so i captured a video of the very fast boot process and i was unable to find some lines about the pata driver...so that's the cause of the kernel pannic

if you don't have flash(propritetary): use http://keepvid.com/ to get the video and use vlc 0.8.6 for reading the file

Attach your kernel .config and reopen then...

I'd suggest that you decide which drivers you want to use first, and configure grub accordingly. Also, do NOT use make oldconfig to transfer your kernel configuration from <2.6.19 to 2.6.19+
