emergeing ooextras, an ebuild with templates gives us following:
* Please add /opt/ooextras to your template paths in OpenOffice.org 
 * You can do this under: 
 * Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Paths
but the template Paths had been disabled since openoffice 2.0.3, there is no gui-way to set them.
Workarounds have been posted at http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=3813964#3813964 but these are no clean solutions.

At least with openoffice-2.1.0 I can set this as stated in Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Paths. Or are you talking about openoffice-bin?

Im talking about openoffice-2.0.4 from source amd64 and openoffice-bin-2.0.3 x86.
Today I made an update (laptop x86) on the -bin version and the templatepath is accessable again. Seems that it has been fixed in the 2.1 versions as you are using the source. Thank you.
