If I try to emerge media-video/vlc-0.8.6 it fails with the error 

/usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.6/../../../../i686-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld: cannot find -llzo

lzo-2.02 was installed on my system, but only provides liblzo2.a. After emerging =dev-libs/lzo-1.08-r1 it compiles fine, so you should add the correspondending dependency to the vlc ebuild.
