Now that Sun has open-sourced their hotspot virtual machine and javac java compiler, the next generation JDK 6 should be added to portage. A final release should not take long, as the current one is already a release candidate.

I don't see how opensourcing jdk (which is a fork of 1.7 codebase and not finished yet) is related to jdk 1.6. It will be added to portage when it's final. Meanwhile you can find the RC snapshots in java overlay at overlays.gentoo.org.
