I have the following idea: would it be possible to split the kernels in a way that not the entire distribution is downloaded but say only the specific platform parts?

Most users only use the i386 part (2.9MB) vs the entire arch dir (52MB). The total arch dir inside a tar.bz2 is 7MB. The i386 dir in a tar.bz2 is 513k.
Hence the difference in file size would be 15% of the total transfer (42MB). In the end you could like to have a specific i386 download, with only i386 drivers etc. but I think this already gives a significant way to reduce file transfer (and disksize).
