emerge world updates nvidia-drivers-1.0.9629.ebuild with nvidia-drivers-1.0.9742.ebuild
even on cards that are unsupported on nvidia-drivers-1.0.9742

"I'll clear up some confusion here. The supported GPUs list in the 1.0-9742 beta driver README isn't up to date (a bug has been filed to correct this).

Starting with 1.0-9742, all GPUs earlier than NV3x are being moved to a legacy driver branch. The previous legacy GPUs (from 1.0-7184) remain the same, however all GPUs newer than those in 1.0-7184 yet older than NV3x will be supported, moving forward, in the 1.0-96xx driver branch.

You can determine which GPU you have with the following command (which only works while X is running):
$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0

In this example, see the 'Video BIOS' line below:
Model: GeForce FX 5200
IRQ: 209
Video BIOS: 04.34.20.22.00
Card Type: AGP
DMA Size: 32 bits
DMA Mask: 0xffffffff

The 2nd field (34) is the GPU. In this case, its NV34, which is an NV3x GPU."

What are you supposed to do with what?
The thread? The bug?  It was information.  You read it and learn, hopefully.  There was a hope that the ebuild makers would be able to distinguish between the difference in the 96xx and 97xx builds of nvidia.  If they can't they can't.  I was able to resolve my issue easily enough.  I blocked gentoo's ebuilds of nvidia and will use nvidia's and make my own choices.  

Thank you for your response, polite or otherwise.
In the future I am perfectly willing to not open a ticket when I see an issue.  It takes time and  I have usually fixed the problem for myself by the time I open the ticket.
