installed rxvt-2.7.8-r5 on both x86 and ppc. on both machines, rxvt cannot/does
not write to utmp. if you run 'rxvt +ut' then type 'w' or 'who', you will not
see the new login listed.

as installed on both machines (output of 'rxvt -h'):

Rxvt v2.7.8 - released: 29 NOVEMBER 2001

perhaps rxvt cannot write to /var/log/utmp? does it need to be setgid?

while emerging rxvt-2.7.9 i saw this:

Try the updated rxvt-2.7.10 ebuild, they fixed a bunch of utmp problems.

rxvt-2.7.10 fixed this

doesn't work for me in 2.7.10.

Not fixed for rxvt 2.7.10, /usr/bin/rxvt should be setgid (utmP) in order to write to /var/run/utmp
