Hachoir-urwid is a text-interface for exploring binary files.  Using this tool you can exactly know the meaning of each bit/byte of your files. With direction keys, you can navigate in the field tree.  It is written in Python, based on the "hachoir" and "hachoir-parser" modules.
The ebuild i will attach uses distutils.eclass, and is pretty simple.
